I finished reading Family by Pa Chin. Very Chinese. It talks a lot about the beginning of China’s transition from Confucianism into Communism; told through the eyes of an 18 year old radical.
There’s a lot of women that die throughout the book. One drowns herself in a lake, another starves herself to death, and a third dies because she is forced into the countryside during child birth for a superstitious reason. I think this is meant to express how difficult life was for women in early 20th century China, but it’s a little discomforting. At the same time, Pa Chin also writes about how women should speak their mind. So he respects women, he just thinks that they’re a bit perishable.
