When I was younger, I didn’t have cable television. It seemed so exciting and dangerous—I really wanted it. When I would go to my brother and sister’s house, I would stay up late and watch MTV. I was mesmerized. There was nothing at all like it on regular television.
I didn’t know the names of any of the shows at the time, but Liquid Television was probably one of my favorite things in the world for a while. My memory is bad, and I can’t tell you a single thing that I saw, but the memory of the feeling that I got watching is one of my main inspirations for creating. It was a feeling I had only dabbled in previously, watching Nightmare on Elm Street movies or The Gate on late night broadcast TV.
When I finally got cable, it was mostly just the same as regular TV, and by that time, MTV was slipping. They still had some great animations and 120 minutes was a pretty good show (Matt Pinfield somehow pulling off the longest running VJ spot of all time), but I felt let down. At least there were reruns of Bevis and Butthead and The Head.
